Fun Fact about Gold Beach
Gold Beach has one of the few remaining historic mailboat routes in the U.S. The service from the Port of Gold Beach, which runs upriver 40 miles to Agness and Illahe, began in 1895 and continues to this day. The original boats were 18-foot, double-ended rowboats. Operators sometimes used poles to move the boats in shallow areas and pulled the boats with ropes over treacherous rapids. The first mail boat trip took four days to accomplish.
