Fun Fact about Gold Beach
Jet boats run from May through mid-October with a variety of tours available, from bay and estuary trips to a 104-mile round trip excursion.
Gold Beach has one of the few remaining historic mailboat routes in the U.S. The service from the Port of Gold Beach, which runs upriver 40 miles to Agness and Illahe, began in 1895 and continues to this day. The original boats were 18-foot, double-ended rowboats. Operators sometimes used poles to move the boats in shallow areas and pulled the boats with ropes over treacherous rapids. The first mail boat trip took four days to accomplish.
Today, jet boats operated by Jerry’s Rogue Jets deliver the mail and carry 34,000 tourist passengers a year on the scenic trips. The modern boats can travel in just 8 inches of water and can reach speeds of 50 mph, but typically travel at 35 mph.
Of those 34,000 jet boat tourists, few extend their stays in our community. Gold Beach Main Street’s ambition is to transform the town into a more welcoming and attractive environment that encourages people to stay longer, enjoy a host of other activities in the area, and support our local struggling businesses.
The Rogue is one of the original eight rivers in U.S. to be declared wild and scenic in 1968. Its designation was prompted by plans to construct a dam in Copper Canyon, which would have put the town of Agness underwater.
